There is a menu change next week. On Wednesday, we will be having turkey and cheese instead of chicken chef salad. On Thursday, we will be having chicken chef salad instead of turkey and cheese. Hopefully this will help when making those menu choices.

Congratulations to Mason for winning the Golden Paw award for 3rd grade!
Happy Birthday to Colton! Enjoy your special day! Congratulations to Claire for being our Tiger Card winner this week! Lots of good news to celebrate today! Remember, there is no school on Monday! We are changing our end of school routine a little bit. We will now be leaving the school out the north door across from the cafeteria. We are trying to eliminate some of the confusion near the front door. So from now on third and fourth grade will be leaving through this door. We got behind a little bit in our afternoon classes, so we did not have our nutrition quiz today. It will be next week. I will post it on the Coming Attractions page soon. Have a great weekend and stay cool! The special days or theme days for Fridays have been set. You can find the days by clicking on the link below.
Special Days Special Days are days set aside to wear clothing that follow a certain theme. We also use the themes for class discussion and give the students a chance to share a personal experience about the theme. It makes for We will still have Part 1 of our Spelling Test as scheduled tomorrow. We are believing for a full day of school so that we can try and catch up for the two shortened days this week. We are going to try to finish up our nutrition unit in Science and hopefully finish our Social Studies Map skills by middle of next week.
Please review the subtraction facts with your child this week and next. We are really trying to get our addition and subtraction facts solid before we begin multiplication in the coming weeks! We will take our Reading quiz on the computer tomorrow. Most of the students did very well with the format last week. Thank you for all that you do. It is such a joy to work with your children this year! It was like Christmas in August when the announcement was made that we were getting out of school early today because of heat! There was a buzz and excitement in the air that is only heard on party days and snow days. You never know what can happen on any given day. I thought today would be a good time to publish some of our "hard at work pictures" from the past few days. Enjoy! The kids are such troopers! They continued to work hard even with red faces and sweaty bodies!
We began a new story in Reading, discussing problem and solution. Addition and subtraction fact families were the subject of Math today! In Science we played Blast Off choosing the proper foods that would fuel our rocketship so that it could blast off to another planet. If your child would like to play this game at home, they can find Blast Off on my website under homework helpers and educational links. In order for me to get to know the students better, we are creating a top ten list about things we should all know about each other. I have learned a lot about the kids already! We are ready to begin week 2 in Spelling with a new list of words and a review of long vowels. And finally, three cheers for the class...everyone handed in their homework from over the weekend! Hip, Hip, Horray!!!! I can't believe we have already been back to school for a week! Even though it has been hot and the air is not working, it has been a great week getting to know the students!
In Science, we are discussing ways to keep our bodies healthy and learning about the five food groups. We are learning all about My Plate and how much of each food group we need to keep our bodies healthy and strong. The students now understand a little more about the choices we are offered for our lunch menu! We now have about nine students that have passed the addition timed test! Keep practicing those addition facts! The first Spelling Test went really well. The children did a great job with the new format. They are loving the fact that they can use they're spelling notebook for "real world" spelling! Don't forget to remind your child to read for 30 minutes everyday. They are getting about 15 minutes in class per day, so that only leaves 15 minutes at home. Many children have already turned in their 150 minutes for the week! How awesome is that?!!! Thank you for a great start to our school year! The students are learning a catchy little tune to learn the oceans and the continents. I hear them humming it or singing it throughout the day. You probably have heard it too! It is one of those tunes that you just can't get out of your head. I have a link posted if you would like the tune stuck in your head too!
Our Reading quiz on the computer was successful today! I will not be sending home a copy of the quiz, but the grade will be posted in Teacher Ease in the next few days. I am hoping to continue our weekly quizzes on the computer if things continue to go smoothly! We took our first Spelling test today! The students are such good listeners! I was very proud of their work today! Today we were all feeling the effects of the heat! If you would like to send a water bottle with your child during these warm days, you are welcome to do so. Please make sure it has a lid on it.
Subjects and Predicates were on our adgenda today. The students seemed to pick this concept up quickly and did a great job of locating the verb too! We voted on a class song for the continents and oceans. I hope to have the video on the website this evening! We read in partners as we re-read Grandfather's Journey. Please listen to your child read this story at home tonight. We are still reviewing those addition facts. Each day, we are getting further in our 5 minute timed tests with several of us finishing 100 problems in 5 minutes! We had another productive day in 3rd grade! Today is double post day! Sorry, I had yesterday's post all ready, but forgot to publish it! Today we went to the Computer Lab for the first time this year. Due to the fact that most of us slept during summer vacation, we had a little trouble remembering our log-in information. Now that we have that first trip under our belt, the next trip to the computer lab on Thursday will go much smoother.
We started learning the oceans and continents and where they are located on the map. We learned a cool new song to remember the names of the continents. I will put a link to the song on the educational links page. There is also a continents and oceans website that the children can visit to practice where they are located. I have a link on myeducational links page for that website as well. We had our first couple of pages of homework today. Please make sure that if there is not a checkmark in the box in the assignment notebook across from that subject, your child completes their homework and turns it in the tray tomorrow morning. Our second Parent Information Night is tonight. I look forward to seeing those of you that could not make it last Thursday. Your children had a wonderful day today! The day went by so fast! We are working on learning our routine and schedule. We all love the fact that PE is in the morning and at 9am!!
We started the morning labeling all of our folders and notebooks. We began our review of the addition strategies and took a timed test for addition in Math, and learned new vocabulary words in Reading. The highlight of our day was going around the playground and the school taking photographs with an ipad of items that we thought had to do with Science! We finished up our day visiting the library and checking out new books so that we can begin our outside reading. The students have a Reading Log that is to be signed nightly after your child has read for 30 minutes. Please look for this in their homework folder. What a great day we had getting to know each other and learning about 3rd grade! It was so much fun watching the students so excited over their new school supplies and their new classroom. We even had a surprise treat as Garrett Gunter, a senior from Villa Grove High School, came to play his guitar for us. We really enjoyed listening to the talented musician! If you child comes home asking to take guitar lessons, don't be surprised! After spending the morning organizing our desk, and learning about our new textbooks and the rules of the school and classroom, we were famished! We couldn't wait to dig into lunch! After lunch, we found that our afternoons are very short, especially when we get out at 2:00!! What a great start to 3rd grade!
