Reading
Every student reads. Every student succeeds.
Life is made up of big and small adventures. Reading can take you on these adventures.
This year we will be using novel units to increase comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. We will be incorporating the Common Core Standards to reflect the skills and knowledge students will need to succeed in college, career and life. In each unit I will be focusing on character traits, figurative language, theme and finding evidence from the text to grasp information, arguments, ideas and details. Many more skills will be covered, but these four will be the focus for every novel we read. We will be reading fiction and nonfiction selections from a variety of authors to help expand our knowledge of different types of texts. This will allow students to build a knowledge through texts so that they can learn independently. My goal is to spread my enthusiasm and knowledge of reading to the children of my classroom and to help increase their reading skills and their interest in reading!
Students will also be required to read 15 minutes per day outside of the classroom. They will have a separate Reading Log that will be checked daily. A signed log each day will earn the student a sticker. Students can earn prizes based on the number of stickers received each nine weeks.
