Spelling
This year, your child's spelling program may be different from what you've come to expect as "spelling." Instead of a weekly lists of words to memorize, the program that we will be using in our classroom emphasizes the learning of important words, not just for the test on Friday, but learning how to these spell words throughout their entire lifetime, or real word spelling!
This type of spelling takes a while to "grow". We will be working on instruction in phonics, word origins, spelling rules, usage, etc, learning to spelling in everyday writing, and learning to spell words through word study of certain words.
There is a list of words that are required to be spelled correctly for each quarter. (No Excuse Words) These words will need to be spelled correctly in every subject and every piece of writing. Your child will be able to use their spelling folder to look up the correct spelling of these words, just as you would do if you did not know how to spell a word in real life. This list of words will increase with each quarter. I will be taking a weekly usage grade on one of the assignment homework pages from any chosen subject. The students may or may not know which paper I will grade, encouraging them to use their spelling notebook across the curriculum and every day.
This will be one of three grades given each week in spelling (usage, homework, and test grades).
Let's make your child's spelling growth a team effort - you, me and your child all working together to help make your child a speller!
