Congratulations to Jenessa on being our orange card winner of the week! We are so proud of you!
Next week is going to be a busy week in our classroom. We will be finishing up our last two quizzes over the abbreviations of the states in Social Studies, discussing mental math and doing a chapter checkup in Math, discussing changing the ending of nouns and adding a suffix to make the noun plural in Language, drawing and labeling the life cycle of a flowering plant in Science (test will be the following week) and taking a quiz over the parts of the flower. We will also be learning about homophones (words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings) in Spelling. Reading will also bring us a review in cause and effect and compare and contrast, but I will introduce encyclopedia skills.
On Friday, October 17, we will be working on our Pumpkin Math Pumpkin Science project most of the day. I will provide each student with a pumpkin that we will use to weigh, measure, test to see whether it sinks or floats, count the lines, and count the seeds. (OH MY!) We will make predictions and develop hypothesis about these concepts. We will also attempt to carve our pumpkins if time allows. The students love this day, but do tend to get a little messy. They will be bringing the pumpkin home that afternoon, so please be aware the students will be arriving home with it. (I will provide a sack for them to carry the pumpkin.) Some students like to wear their Art shirt during the actual "digging in" of the pumpkin or some just come to school dressed in old clothes. Do not send your child in their "Sunday Best." (: This is always a fun project learning about how pumpkins relate to Science and Math!
Don't forget to sign up for a holiday party. We have four parties a year and need volunteers for a successful party!
October is moving quickly! The end of the first nine weeks will be Friday, October 17. Grades will be available after 4pm. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you during Parent/Teacher Conferences on the 23rd! (:
